Special Exhibition: “Slaughterhouse 5 – Literary Testaments to the Destruction of Dresden”

so-it-goes

The year 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II – and the destruction of Dresden by allied bombers from 13 to 15 February 1945. In honour of this occasion, the “Slaughterhouse 5” exhibition documents a variety of perspectives on the event with original manuscripts and personal effects of Kurt Vonnegut, Ida Kästner, Durs Grünbein, and others, which will be on public display for the first time.

6 February – 12 May 2015

Museum of Military History, Dresden (2nd floor)

Admission included in price of regular museum ticket

The bombing of Dresden killed over 25,000 people and at the same time saved hundreds of others, including Jews, political prisoners and forced labourers. The exhibition looks at the role of the Dresden bombing in propaganda campaigns during and after the war, in myths and legends, and in the memories of those who were children at the time, whose trauma was long overshadowed by war guilt and the shame over German crimes.

The exhibition is under the patronage of Günter Kunert, writer and president of the PEN Centre of German-Speaking Writers Abroad.
